Monopoly Pricing When Customers Queue

نویسنده

چکیده

It takes time to process purchases and as a result a queue of customers may form. The pricing and service rate decisions of a monopolist who must take this into account are characterized. We nd that an increase in the average number of customers arriving in the market either has no e ect on the monopoly price, or else causes the monopolist to reduce the price in the short run. In the long run the monopolist will increase the service rate and raise the price. When customer preferences are linear the equilibrium is socially e cient. When preferences are not linear equilibrium will not normally be socially e cient. Journal of Economic Literature codes: L 12, L 15.

Pricing and Prioritizing Time-Sensitive Customers with Heterogeneous Demand Rates

We consider the pricing/lead-time menu design problem for a monopoly service where time-sensitive customers have demand on multiple occasions. Customers differ in their demand rates and valuations per use. We compare a model where the demand rate is the private information of the buyers to a model where the firm has full information. The model assumes that customers queue for a finite-capacity ...

Admission control and pricing in a queue with batch arrivals

We investigate a problem of admission control and pricing in a firm which dominates the market. In the model, there is a single server with exponential service times and arrivals follow a compound Poisson process where the number of customers in a group is an arbitrary discrete random variable. Each arriving group calculates the expected return for the whole group using the waiting cost per uni...

Time and Volume Based Optimal Pricing Strategies for Telecommunication Networks

In the recent past, there have been several initiatives by major network providers such as Turk Telekom lead the industry towards network capacity distribution in Turkey. In this study, we use a monopoly pricing model to examine the optimal pricing strategies for “payper-volume” and “pay-per-time” based leasing of data networks. Traditionally, network capacity distribution includes short/long t...

Revenue Maximization in Service Systems with Heterogeneous Customers

In this paper, we consider revenue maximization problem for a two server system in the presence of heterogeneous customers. We assume that the customers differ in their cost for unit delay and this is modeled as a continuous random variable with a distribution F. We also assume that each server charges an admission price to each customer that decide to join its queue. We first consider the mono...

On Monopoly Insurance Pricing when Agents Differ in Risk Aversion

The paper analyzes a monopolistic insurer’s pricing strategies when potential customers differ in risk aversion and their type cannot be observed by the insurer. Our model builds on Schlesinger (1983), who derived optimal nonlinear pricing strategies for competitive and monopolistic insurance markets. While Schlesinger assumed existence, we are concerned with conditions under which optimal stra...
